WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is close to naming Thomas Perez, a civil rights official in the Justice Department, as his choice to head the Department of Labor, two people familiar with the process say.

His nomination could come as early as Monday, the people familiar with the process said Saturday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak prior to the official announcement.

If confirmed, Perez would replace Hilda Solis, who resigned in January.

White House spokesman Matt Lehrich declined to comment.

Perez, 51, has led the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division since 2009 and previously served as Maryland’s labor secretary. He is expected to have solid support from organized labor as well as the Hispanic community, which is eager to have representation in Obama’s second-term Cabinet.

Solis was the first Hispanic woman to head an agency at the Cabinet level. Perez was the first Latino elected to the Montgomery County Council in Maryland, where he served from 2002 to 2006.

Perez would come to the Labor Department as Obama pushes a major immigration overhaul, which could include changes in how employers hire guest workers. Labor Department officials have also taken a prominent role in supporting Obama’s effort to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 an hour.

At the Justice Department, Perez played a leading role in the decision to challenge voter ID laws in Texas and South Carolina that could restrict minority voting rights. A federal court later struck down the Texas law and delayed implementation of the law in South Carolina until after the 2012 election.

Perez was easily confirmed by the Senate for his Justice Department post, but since then, some GOP lawmakers have criticized his role in persuading the city of St. Paul, Minn., to withdraw a lending discrimination lawsuit from the Supreme Court. In exchange, the Justice Department declined to join two whistle-blower lawsuits against St. Paul that could have returned millions of dollars in damages to the federal government.

The St. Paul case had challenged the use of statistics to prove race discrimination under the 1968 Fair Housing Act, and Justice Department officials were concerned the court could strike down the practice.

A letter last year from four Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Rep. Darrell Issa of California, criticized Perez for a “quid pro quo arrangement” that potentially cost taxpayers more than $180 million.

Yahoo should be ashamed. This liberal portal has made it clear that those of us who do not march in lock-step or deviate from the steered opinion when they beat the drums will be banished from the discussion. They are a significant part of the subterfuge and promote this invasion.

My censored comment:

The National Council of La Raza administration. Obama has Cecilia Munoz, former VP of La Raza as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs in the Executive Branch of the White House, Ester Olavarria as counsel to Janet Napolitano —who was counsel to Sen. Kennedy on illegal alien, excuse me, immigration issues (which is what we’ve come to expect from these “one issue” Mexican Studies graduates and anchor babies). Ken Salazar, whose policies have kept the Border Patrol and American citizens out of national parks while millions of illegal aliens have dumped hundreds of millions of tons of trash and human waste with enough plastic bags, clothing, and backpacks to stock several thousand Walmart’s.  Hilda Solis wore her allegiance to Mexico on her sleeve. Thomas Perez (Asst. Attorney General) is a vile racist who, like all of them, aspire to return the Southwest U.S. to Mexico (Reconquista). Mexico never owned or occupied these lands.

These people care nothing about Americans. They salute the Mexican flag and get approval from the meddling Mexican government, including the last few presidents scold us while having the harshest immigration laws on this continent. Perez is a La Raza subversive member of CASA de Maryland which he is a card-carrying member. It reads like a Who’s Who of La Raza, MEChA, LULAC, MALDEF, and the typical suspects of the segregationist -isolationist Reconquista movement.

There are 22 million illegal aliens running rampant across the U.S., and the numbers could even be upwards of 30 million. They do not speak English, up from 89 percent in 1990. When more than half the people of so vast a county do not speak English, arrogantly insist that we speak their language, promote their Mexican agendas, do not listen to the same radio and TV programs as the rest of us, do not read the same newspapers, magazines, or books, do not share the same heroes, history, or holidays, do not assimilate, and care nothing about the American people, our laws or our culture —how can we allow our temporary spineless politicians and their La Raza subversives in political office and the media to promote this invasion repackaged as immigration as opposed to criminal entry and still reward them with citizenship?

Pandering to the illegitimate Hispanic vote, the exchange of amnesty for illegal aliens, and a fast track to unearned citizenship may win the editorial encomiums, but they will also accelerate the end of the two-party hegemony in American politics. Dissenting Americans, the most loyal voting bloc either party has, which delivers 95 percent of all votes, will be reduced to the labels of nativists, racists, right-wingers, and anti-immigrant because of an illegal alien policy championed by politicians without testicles. If any of them, especially the Democrats, and Neville Chamberlain types such as Jeb Bush believe these millions upon millions of uneducated, unskilled illegal aliens are going to rally to a party that advocates breaking and entering —and being rewarded for it, as opposed to following the law and morals, they are in need of leucotomy procedures.

It is absurd that those who share this entitlement mindset, by capitulation to the Mexican government and anchor baby sentimentalists loyal to Mexico, would castigate dissenters, or any American, and then scowl at the mention of expulsion to millions of interlopers and their resource-robbing clans. We must decide who we wish to come, and from where. Then we must set our policies and enforce them. Entry into the country must be designed to serve the need of the nation, not the wants of Mexico, or La Raza. America, after all, is for Americans first. Coming to this country is not a right that belongs to anybody that can sneak in and everybody who wants to come uninvited with the support of Mexican nationals who insist we do just that. It is a privilege we Americans alone decide to confer…
